like dust motes

blown crosswise

by a pigeon’s

wing.

chunks of meat separated

by packing and

refrigeration.

bones rattling against

bones

and root of tree.

you met Omar Khadr

at a camping store

while trying to find

a tent –

his one eye translucent

like spilled

countertop milk.

recall the restaurant man,

burger in hand:

Omar Khadr should rot in jail

for the rest of his days

you reach out and shake

Omar’s hand.

this is not the hand of a man

who should rot in jail.

you leave without the

tent.
